It has almost been a month since the Outdoor Retailer Show bombarded Salt Lake City. We were extremely busy this show trying to find what who were some of the up and coming companies as well and what new products were going to make a difference in the outdoor industry. Since the show for the past month we here at Open Air Life, have scrutinized our notes and images looking for what we believe were the “Best of OR”. We narrowed it down to 27 but there were many more that are truly runners up. If we get some extra time we will definitely write those up as well. First up, a new tent pole technology. <\/p>\n

A couple years back Easton Mountain Products introduced carbon fiber tent poles that were both strong and light. They also incorporated these poles into some pretty sweet tents. But the price tag was a little expensive for the average consumer. But for 2014 Easton Mountain Products is introducing yet another great new technology; the new Syclone\u2122 tent pole technology. Engineered from top-grade composite materials with multi-directional wound construction, Easton\u2019s new Syclone tent pole is the most resilient tent pole ever developed by Easton. But the Tension series tents do a pretty good job of that. With a minimalist tent design Tension 30 and 40 tents maximizes the key component of tension. But the two-millimeter cord integrated at the seams creates the perfect amount of tension for optimal stability. But the best part of the tent is the weight. There are many new pads on the market that make sleeping in the woods a lot more comfortable. The Double Z Air pad is one that really impressed me for both its thickness and weight. This is a 4\u201d thick pad and it only weighs 18 ounces. This is definitely a warm weather pad, with an estimate R-Value of 1.5. This pad has a stabilizer construction which distributes weight evenly across the pad, creating a smoother, more comfortable feel. It also includes a two piece valve for one way inflation and quick deflation. We had the opportunity to get in a couple of these kayaks and take them out for a paddle. I was amazed from the start. What makes this boat unique is the origami design. In minutes this boat unfolds out of a compact box. The origami skin has creases permanently molded in, so it folds easily between boat and case. There is only one seam\u2014above the water line, on top of the boat. It closes tight with a watertight rubber gasket. Before getting in the water with the boat, I was a little skeptical about how watertight it might be. But after a few minutes in the water, my concerns were gone. The only other pressing question on our minds was how many times can this kayak be folded and unfolded. They told us that it was rated for 20,000 fold cycles without structural failure. I was impressed by their new dress shoes or brown shoes. But the down side to flip flops is that the straps do not adjust for a great fit. Well Olukai has taken the flip flop one step further with their new Holomua (Translation: Gorgeous). They have added adjustable strapping, injected TPU plate, segmented outsole, and a molded footbed. Think of a light hiking shoe bottom with a flip flop on top. Making a running shoe that stands out can be a feat. But New Balance has done just that. Their new Fresh Foam running shoe uses cutting edge software to produce a shoe that is plush without sacrificing performance. New Balance uses a concave honeycomb design to add structure and support where needed but then use a convex honeycomb design to give a great cushioned ride. The EvaPOURation Jacket is only $99 but it is full of technology. Columbia didn\u2019t hold back on this jacket. It features Omni-Wick Evap which uses a special compound that disperses sweat quickly across a broad surface area for accelerated evaporation and Omni-Tech which provides premium air-permeable waterproof protection. The jacket is also fully seam sealed and has underarm venting for even more breathability. Using Pontetorto Technostretch which is a body hugging fabric and combining it with Cocona fabric this jacket offers the ultimate in moisture management. My go to jacket for most of winter is the Eddie Bauer Microtherm Down hoodie as it is lightweight but warm. But by basically taking the Microtherm jacket and adding CORDURA fabric overlays and a water-repellant coating, Eddie Bauer has created a boomer jacket. This jacket also features 700-fill StormRepel Down, a down that is treated with durable water-repellent (DWR), helping make it moisture resistant. Deuter has been making pack for years and they have a few great kid carriers currently but for 2014 they are introducing the new Kid Comfort Air. What sets this carrier apart from other carrier is the Deuter Aircomfort ventilated back system that reduces perspiration by 25%. This is a great feature when heading out hiking in the summer heat. But when the weather turns cold or if you are with a group backpacking the Flash can fall short. But the new Joule solves both of those problems. With the ability to boil 1 liter of water in 2 minutes 40 seconds, the Joule offers consistent heat output down to 10\u00b0F\/-12\u00b0C. Combined with a 2.5 liter insulated FluxRing vessel, the Joule offers fuel efficiency, portability, easy setup, and the reliability you expect from Jetboil. Currently Brunton has a few different solutions for recharging electronic when away from the grid, but their new Hydrogen Reactor is different. As the name implies this device combines hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity on the move and under any conditions. It works by screwing in a Hydrogen Core into the Hydrogen Reactor to create power that can then be used to power USB devices like smartphones, tablet computers, UV water purifiers, rechargeable lights and GPS transceivers. The best part is that you do not have to wait for the sun to come out. Down side is you have to carry extra Hydrogen Cores for extended trips. It is durable, reliable and simple put just works great. But now they have even improved something that was great before. The new 12V Powermonkey Extreme features a 12V DC output port that is capable of charging many more devices directly from the unit. The best part is how easy it is to charger the Powermonkey Extreme. You can use the main charger from any electrical socket, USB or via a solar panel. I have not tried the new 12V but the previous model I have found it best to completely charge it before leaving the house and then maintain the battery via the solar panel. If you have never seen any products from PowerTravel I would suggest taking a serious look. Now taking water for your dog doesn\u2019t get much easier. The Biva Bota is a collapsible waterproof reservoir for water on the go. Welded fabric technology creates a watertight seal and allows for single wall construction. You simply fill the Biva Bota up with water and throw it in a pack. When your dog need some water you simply unscrew the lid and dispense as much water as you think your dog will drink. The one-way fill and dispense valve keeps the reservoir water clean. When your dog is done drinking simple discard any unused water, screw on the lid and away you go. Well, that could all change if you pick up the new Scrubba Wash Bag. The Scrubba Wash Bag reminds me a little of a dry sack that is designed for washing your clothes. You simply throw your clothes inside the bag, add just a bit of water and soap, shake, squeeze and rub the bag and in less than 5 minutes you will have clean clothes. Montane\u2019s new Minimus sleeping bag is not available until Spring \/ Summer 2014, but it has already been recognized with a respected OutDoor industry award at the recent OutDoor show in Friedrichshafen, Germany. Judged by a panel of international outdoor industry experts, the OutDoor industry awards recognize products that push the boundaries of innovation, quality, functionality and sustainability. The Minimus sleeping bag was credited for its revolutionary and innovative design that provides a waterproof, highly breathable sleeping bag which is incredibly lightweight. The Minimus is constructed from PERTEX Shield +, a fabric used in technical super lightweight Mpntane clothing, making it both highly waterproof and hyper breathable. Filled with 12.1oz of high quality 800+ fill power goose down, the Minimus holds an impressive warmth to weight ratio with a total weight of just 30.6oz. The EN Comfort rating is 37\u00b0F with a Comfort Limit of 28\u00b0 F. The bag has fully taped trapezoidal baffles which are both waterproof and designed to minimize cold spots. This combination of warmth, waterproofness and high breathability makes for a sleeping bag that is perfect for fast backpacking or fast alpinism where ultra lightweight minimalist tents or exposed bivouacs will be used.
